Put another way, Communications is the creative (the What), Public Affairs the mechanical (the How). And mechanical without imagination is, as you suggest, almost inevitably mediocre. It is unfortunate that the focus and the resources rarely reflect the importance of this difference. If I were asked (no one has) I would abolish the “Public Affairs” term: we all communicate, we all have networks, and we all have different strengths, weaknesses and preferences. In the big tent of Communications, where both the What and the How would dwell, a division of labour would emerge...or appropriate talent recruited. Just not labeled “Public Affairs”. Those should be left to presidents, prime ministers, hip-hop artists and movie stars.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04938862678070775351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1242269770415470743.post-5839401495238295552013-02-04T13:08:13.561+01:002013-02-04T13:08:13.561+01:00Thank you Kathryn. You don't want to deliver different messages and confuse things. But there is a real arrogance and feeling that communications is the weaker science. Until you get a nice PR hit or craft messages that really help hit the client's point home.

Good piece, Virginia. I'd love to read more from this perspective.Kathryn Sheridanhttp://www.twitter.com/kathrynsheridannoreply@blogger.com
